Happy Monday: New Girl

Happy Monday

New layout--- I HATED the last one.  It hurt my eyes and quite frankly looked like a 9 year old girl wrote this blog.

Anyway Happy Monday:

Genre: TV Shows
Topic:  New Girl

At start of a new TV season brings much trimoil in my house.  Which pilots will stay, which ones will I hate and therefore stay on the air for years (Seriously,  Grey's Anatomy  is still on the air?  Really?) and which shows will I love and be canceled in three episodes. Oh so many great shows ended up in the TV graveyard.  Wonderfalls, Clerks, Committed just to name a few.

Each year as the quaility of television decreases and my need for time increases, I find myself simply not interested in TV like I used to be.

Until this year when I discovered  New Girl.  I will say I was HOOKED by the trailer.  Within five minutes I knew "THIS WAS MY SHOW."

New Girl is all about Jess, a wacky, kind hearted girl who was dumped by her cheating boyfriend and forced to live with three guys in a loft.  It's the supporting cast that balances out the show, because Jess herself, while cute as all get out can be too much to take on her own, it's Nick's negative view of the world that's so funny.

Also what the show shines at is the balance of subplots, some of the best episodes aren't Jess focused.   For example when Nick and Schmidt go to war over fixing things in the apartment, is non stop awesomeness.

Nick: Unlike you Schmidt, I don't just throw my money at problems!
Schmidt: All I'm hearing is I can't use my bathroom because you're poor.

And yes there is the minor subplot of will Jess and Nick get together, but it's not a HUGE part of the show.

In the interest of FULL disclosure, if I had not met my husband back in college, YES I would be EXACTLY like Jess, and that's one of the reasons why I love it.
Do yourself a favor and give up 22 minutes of your life and watch New Girl.  It's basically perfect.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

So while everyone is listing all the things they are thankful for, I'm going to be watching TV.  Yep. Maybe I'll write.

Most likely I'll be watching TV.  Here's a list of TV Marathons happening TODAY
Thank you TV Squad for the links. http://www.tvsquad.com/2010/11/19/thanksgiving-tv-picks-specials-marathons/

THURSDAY, NOV. 25
'Burn Notice' Marathon – It may not be the first thing you think of when you think of the show, but Michael, Sam, Fiona, Jesse and Maddie have formed their own little family unit of sorts, as you get a chance to remember in this 15-hour marathon (6AM, USA)

'Biography' Marathon – George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Leo DiCaprio and Julia Roberts are among the famous faces profiled in this 20-hour marathon (8AM, Bio Channel)

'I Dream of Jeannie' and 'Bewitched' Marathons – It's a magic-al Thanksgiving with Jeannie and Samantha (8AM, TV Land)

James Bond Movie Marathon – Bond, on Syfy? Ours is not to question why. Ours is to try to convince everyone to stop watching football for a bit so we can watch 'Goldeneye' at 3:30PM, part of this 12-movie 007 fest (8AM, Syfy)

'Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade' – 'Today' trio Matt Lauer, Meredith Viera and Al Roker host the 84th Macy's Turkey Day parade, which includes more than 800 clowns, Jimmy Fallon and The Roots, Kanye West, The Muppets and the cast of the Green Day Broadway musical 'American Idiot' (9AM, NBC)

'Man Vs. Food' Marathon – You may have your own food challenge today, trying to choke down Aunt Gladys' dry turkey, but that's nothing compared to the mammoth-sized foods Adam tackles in this 19-hour run (9AM, Travel)

'MythBusters' Marathon – 11 hours of myth-bustin' fun! (9AM, Discovery)

'Campus PD' Marathon – Every episode of the first and second seasons makes for a lot of moments that will make you realize whatever your fam is up to today, it could be worse. And a lot more drunken (12:30PM, G4)

'Holiday in the Hills: Beverly Hills 90210' Marathon – Six installments of '90210' (the original series!) holiday fun (6PM, SoapNet)

'Family Game Night' Marathon – Fams compete in life-sized versions of Hasbro board games in the name of cash and prizes. You'll so want to be the one playing with the life-sized Operation game! (7PM, The Hub)

'A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving' – Peter Brady had pork chops and applesauce, Snoopy has jelly beans and popcorn (plus buttered toast and pretzel sticks, don't forget) (8PM, ABC)

'Punkin Chunkin 2010' – It's that time-honored tradition, the annual gathering of the engineers who've concocted new ways to launch pumpkins into the air. Why? Why not (8PM, Discovery)

'Taylor Swift: Speak Now' – The country diva performs nine tunes and gives fans a behind-the-scenes peek at the release of her latest CD (8PM, NBC)

'Elf' – Will Ferrell has never been more charming than he is as Buddy in this new holiday classic (9PM, USA)

'Beyonce's World Tour' – Kanye West and her hubby, Jay-Z, pop in during this behind-the-scenes look at her world tour, including, of course, performance, and a peek at her glitzy line-up of costumes (9:30PM, ABC)

HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

Mommyhood and writing day 1

Being a mom, it's not as easy as my mom made it look. Last week my daughter was fighting a virus. She had a fever of 102. Hubby took one day off, I took the other day off. Fever= no daycare. My kid gets sick a lot. Lots of colds, lots of ear infections. We just recently figured out that when she started to cough there's a good likelihood she's going to puke. My daughter has her coughing fits at night, just as I'm trying to sleep. I"m not saying she does this on purpose but since she's been born I've racked up a whole lot less sleep then I did before she was on this planet.

I only get to write when she's asleep.

I will admit this- she watches a lot of TV. Yeah I'm a crappy mom. Don't get me wrong, we play, we color, we blow bubbles, we're potty training and all those good things. Every weekend we do at least two or three daughter centered activity.

So this is what I've noticed in children's programing.

1) Tyrone's voice changed in the Backyardgains and Austin doesn't get used enough.
2) Max and Ruby is sort of a terrible children's show because Max is a jerk and Ruby is bossy. It's a weird so of throw back to the 1950's. But the show is so mellow, so that's a plus.
3) I wasn't a fan of the wonder pets, mostly because I don't like that Ming Ming has a lisp. And I'm not sure of Lenny's gender-- I've spent TOO much of my brain power trying to figure it out. But I do think its really funny that the Wonder Pet's don't like Ollie. (the Bunny in the classroom across the hall)
4) Yo Gabba Gabba isn't as horrible as I first thought it was.

TV and children's program aside, there's a lot if stuff in my head that wasn't there two years ago. I have concept of time. How valuable it is, how much time we have on this green and blue planet. Time. It's a four letter world.

Moms out there, what new knowledge do you have in your head, you never thought you would ever know?

Penny and Hank- FAIL

Today I didn't even open the file. No new words. Penny and Hank barely entered my thoughts.
Today was filled with real life stuff.

My daughter, beta reading, e-mailing, taking care of a sick husband, shoveling rocks and saying goodbye to my parents.

Tomorrow I'll write.

Wait, Glee and Lost is on.

CURSE YOU GOOD TV!!!!!!!

Penny and Hank Day 4

Yep, I was home today with a sick kid, so you would think I would get a lot of writing done.

But I was home with a sick kid which means I got about an hour to write.

Chapter 1 is done.

Chapter 2 has one paragraph.

Here it is:

How do I wake up in the morning? Is it the gentle touch of a mother, or the grating noise of a buzzer? Nope, it’s a 75 pound lab mix jumping on my genitals. You would think, since I was woken up this way every day, I would learn and start sleeping on my stomach. Nope. I blame Zack, he was the one who taught the dog to do that. I planned on killing Zack in his sleep one day. It’s been on my to-do list for years.

Word count:2169

Might get some work done tonight, but most likely not. The Office is on and I've got priorities.

Yo Gabba Gabba

Yo Gabba Gabba! Yep at first glance I thought the same thing you did:
What the hell?
What are theses things?
Clearly who ever created it must have been on an illegal substance.
I don't get it.
Is it trying to be retro on purpose?
Did they really just sing a song called, "Don't bite your friends?"

Yep, I thought it was the dumbest show on children's programing.

I don't get DJ Lance, is he the Overlord or the puppet's god or what?
Plex is a magic robot? HUH? Really?
Why are there 4 ecosystems and 5 characters?

Then my daughter started to watch it and by default I started to watch it.

It's not a horrible show.

After reading an entertainment weekly article, I learned that the show was created not by psychologist or a teacher, but by parents. Artistic parents who were in a band called the Aquabats, but parents none the less.

Now the show makes sense.

Clips are short, no more than 3 minutes. Lots of bright colors. Lots of music- simple catchy songs. It encourages kids to get up and dance around translation for non parents "stay in one spot but use a lot of energy to tire you out and so you'll take a nap."

The show has cool musically guests, Weezer, MGNT, the Ting Tings.

Then my daughter tried to bite my arm a few days ago and I said, "No, we don't bite our friends."

Dear God, Yo Gabba Gabba was RIGHT!
